Midwest City, Okla. – The Dr. Debbie Blanke scholarship was created by Oklahoma Women in Higher Education (OKWHE) to honor its namesake for her contributions to advancing women in higher education. The first recipient of the award is Misty Engelbrecht, Rose State College professor and doctoral candidate at the University of Oklahoma pursuing her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with a research emphasis on community colleges.
Engelbrecht began as a student at Rose State and has held several full-time positions on campus. When asked why she teaches, she said, “I teach to inspire. I teach to empower. I teach to relate...Beyond technique and content mastery, teaching is about compassion – compassion toward the subject and toward the students.”
The award provides $500, a fee waiver to attend the OKWHE conference as well as a fee waiver to attend one career development workshop in the next three years.
Misty lives in Norman with her husband and 5-year old son.
