Broken Arrow

Rose State College and Broken Arrow Public Schools (BAPS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish an innovative partnership that will allow high school students completing the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) curriculum to earn college credits at RSC. This collaboration is aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and opening new career pathways in aviation for students in Broken Arrow.

Partnership Goals
The primary objective of the partnership is to provide high school students with the opportunity to earn college credit upon successful completion of the AOPA curriculum. In doing so, the partnership will:

  1. Expand academic and career opportunities for BAPS students in the aviation sector.
  2. Facilitate a smooth transition from high school to college by granting academic credit for completed coursework.
  3. Ensure high-quality instruction by hiring BAPS instructors as adjunct instructors at RSC, who will receive supervision from a mentor teacher.

Academic Course Credit
Students who complete the four-year AOPA curriculum will be eligible to receive the following credits at Rose State College:

  • AVJ 1011: Flight Safety
  • AVI 1014: Private Pilot Ground School or AVI 1313: Introduction to VAS Operations
  • AVI 2123: Aviation History

For students completing the 11th and 12th-grade years of the AOPA curriculum, they will earn:

  • AVI 1011: Flight Safety
  • AVI 1014: Private Pilot Ground School or AVI 1313: Introduction to VAS Operations

Instructor Qualifications and Support
Instructors teaching the AOPA curriculum at Broken Arrow Public Schools will be hired as adjunct faculty at Rose State College, ensuring they meet the college’s academic standards. These instructors will also receive ongoing mentorship and supervision from RSC mentor teachers to maintain instructional quality.

Credit for Prior Learning
In addition to academic credits, students who successfully obtain the FAA Part 107 or FAA Private/Commercial License, or pass the FAA Private Pilot Written Knowledge Test or FAA Instrument Rating Written Test, will be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning at Rose State College.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Rose State College: RSC will hire qualified BAPS instructors as adjunct faculty, supervise them through mentor teachers, and oversee the process of granting academic credits. The Aviation Coordinator and Director of K-12 Initiatives will ensure alignment with RSC’s academic policies and standards.
  • Broken Arrow Public Schools: BAPS will implement the AOPA curriculum and ensure instructors meet RSC’s qualifications. The district will also support students in completing the curriculum and preparing for FAA exams.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in providing high school students with practical, real-world opportunities to pursue careers in aviation while also earning college credit.
