Rose State College and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) showcase the innovative You Can Fly high school curriculum at the 8th Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace annual conference. High school students from around Oklahoma learned how to get a jumpstart on careers in the burgeoning aerospace industry. As the only college in the state to offer the curriculum, RSC creates a clear path for students to earn college credit and seamlessly transfer to college aerospace programs.
Launched in 2017 after the passage of Senate Bill 230, the OKWIAA event has grown into a major platform for celebrating Oklahoma’s women in aviation history and promoting its future. This year’s event, hosted by the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, highlighted education and collaboration's critical role in developing the industry’s workforce.
RSC showcased its commitment to workforce development and aviation education by engaging over 470 students from 32 high schools who attended the event. Students explored aircraft, including F-16s, met pilots and technicians, and experienced the enthusiasm of an industry vital to national security, commerce, and quality of life.
“At Rose State, we are proud to be the only college in Oklahoma certified to teach the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association high school curriculum directly on our campus,” said Travis Hurst, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Through AOPA programs, high school students earn college credit for Flight Safety, Aviation History, and Ground School. These courses provide more than just credits—they’re steppingstones toward future careers in aviation, whether as pilots, engineers, or other key roles in this growing industry.”
Dean of Workforce Development Whitney Alvis emphasized the importance of connecting education and industry to support Oklahoma’s aerospace innovation. “Collaboration between education and industry ensures that Oklahoma remains a leader in aerospace,” Alvis said. “Rose State is dedicated to providing students with pathways to success and equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in this vital sector.”
As a leader in aviation education, RSC continues to invest in programs and partnerships that empower students to excel in aviation and aerospace, reinforcing Oklahoma’s position as a hub for innovation and opportunity.
