Rose State College announces a significant advancement for dental hygiene education in Oklahoma. Rose State Dental Hygiene Program became the first in the state to integrate Diode Laser Certification into its curriculum, allowing students to complete the certification and graduate with this expanded function already integrated into their credentials.
The certification comes in response to recent changes in Oklahoma law, which now allow dental hygienists to perform specific laser procedures within their scope of practice. Recognizing the growing demand for this advanced skill set, RSC has taken the lead in preparing its students, faculty, and practicing hygienists across the state to meet these new standards.
The Diode Laser Certification Course hosted at Rose State was designed as a comprehensive two-part training program, approved for AGD Subject Code 135, and provided participants with 12 continuing education units (CEU). Part I of the course was delivered in a self-paced, virtual format, allowing participants to complete the technical coursework from home or their office at their convenience. This online portion provided an in-depth review of laser physics, the science of light production, an overview of different types of lasers, and a detailed discussion of laser safety and the responsibilities of the Laser Safety Officer. Participants left this portion of the training with a thorough understanding of both doctor and hygiene soft tissue applications of laser use in dentistry.
Part II of the training occurred in person at the Rose State Dental Hygiene Clinic and focused on live, hands-on instruction designed to help participants gain comfort and confidence using the laser. The in-person session reviewed key concepts in laser physics and safety, allowing participants to practice laser techniques on specimens. In addition, attendees were trained on patient education strategies to effectively explain laser procedures and promote patient acceptance of these new technologies. The course also introduced photo biomodulation therapy and its use in patient care, providing a well-rounded education on the expanding role of lasers in dental hygiene practice.
Rose State College extended this certification opportunity beyond its students and faculty by opening enrollment to licensed dental hygienists from across Oklahoma. This initiative supports dental hygienists' professional growth and ensures Oklahoma patients benefit from the most advanced care possible.
As Oklahoma’s leader in dental hygiene education, Rose State College is at the forefront of innovation and workforce development, empowering the next generation of hygienists with the tools and training they need to succeed.
