Glad I Chose Rose | Jazmyne Boyles-Vance

Rose State College is proud of our students – past and present. We’re excited to introduce you to the next Raider in our “Glad I Chose Rose” series, highlighting Rose State College alumni.

Meet Jazmyne Boyles-Vance. Class of 2019.

Jazmyne began her education journey at a different institution but quickly realized it didn’t fit what she wanted. She learned about Rose State College from a friend who attended RSC and suggested she transfer.

As a first-generation college student, Jazmyne committed early to attending college and finding the right environment to support her goals.

She arrived on RSC’s campus in August 2017 and started working toward her Liberal Studies degree.

While working as a student employee in the TRIO Student Support Services program, Jazmyne strengthened her public speaking skills, built confidence, and improved her time-management abilities. She advanced from work-study to Academic Mentor and then to Office Manager in the TRIO Office.

Jazmyne graduated from RSC in May 2019 and transferred to the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) to study Fashion Marketing. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in 2021.

Today, Jazmyne serves as the Academic Advisor for the TRIO program at RSC. She guides students through enrollment, scholarship opportunities, and transfer pathways while supervising the part-time TRIO staff members.

Jazmyne recalls her favorite memory from RSC: the day Student Engagement Office hosted an event where students could ride camels on campus.

“It was the first time I had seen the campus mall lined with students, faculty, staff, and student organizations. It’s one of my favorite memories because it was the first time I looked around and thought, “Wow, so this is college.” It was so vivid and satisfying seeing so many students together. For me, it was a moment of clarity that I, along with so any others were just happy to be on campus.”

Today, Jazmyne loves participating in the annual Raider Days celebration during the first two days of school because she remembers the excitement she felt as a student embarking on a new adventure.

When we asked Jazmyne who impacted her time at RSC the most as a student, she immediately named Amber Mitchell and Leticia (Tish) Barrios.

“Both Amber and Tish have found themselves in other professional opportunities outside of RSC today, but they were the first women that I met and worked with at RSC,” Jazmyne said.

“Amber was the Director of our TRIO program; she taught me about time management, building a resume and even dealing with personal issues and how to overcome them. Tish taught me how to really build a relationship with students, how to be impactful in other people’s lives, and really helped me find myself. I truly believe both women taught me so much professionally and without them I do not think I would still be in higher education.”

When we asked Jazmyne what advice she would give current RSC students, she smiled and said, “Just talk to people. Ask questions, engage with your professors, and seek out resources. There are so many staff and faculty members who are willing to go out of their way to help you; you just have to be willing to take the first step and ask.”

Jazmyne encourages students to create the kind of college experience they want.

“You build the experience you want from college. Being involved in different clubs, organizations, or sports will only make your experience better. So, get what you want out of college and create the experience you want so you leave RSC feeling satisfied and fulfilled as you move on to whichever adventure is next for you.”
