Students, faculty, and staff cheered as Rosie the Eagle, the Rose State College’s new mascot, hatched in the Jeanie Webb Student Union on Monday, August 25. President Travis Hurst joined the Raider community as they welcomed Rosie into the family, celebrating the moment with selfies, waves, and high-fives.
Rosie’s Story Takes Flight
Rosie’s story began in 1927 when a young Rowdy discovered an injured eagle in his backyard. Rowdy and his mother, a dedicated Red Cross nurse, cared for the eagle until she regained her strength and flew away, leaving a lasting impression on the family. Years later, the eagle returned and named her daughter “Rosie” after the roses blooming in Rowdy’s garden.
As time passed, Rowdy became a military pilot, and Rosie grew up to teach others with determination and heart. During World War II, their paths crossed—Rowdy flew missions with the “Raiders” squadron while Rosie worked as a lead riveter at the Douglas Aircraft Company in Midwest City. In a busy wartime hangar, Rosie recognized Rowdy as the man who once saved her mother, and they formed a lasting friendship built on courage, learning, and community.
Rosie now joins Rowdy to bring energy and excitement to the Raider family. Students can look for the dynamic duo at campus events, games, and celebrations throughout the year—ready to cheer and spread Raider spirit wherever they go.
