Health Information Management
Program Goals & Outcomes
Health Information Technicians compile, analyze, and prepare health information needed by patients, health care providers, third-party payers, and the public. Health Information Technicians work in a variety of job settings and hold a variety of job titles. The Health Information Management Program incorporates clinical; information management; electronic health records; medical coding and classification systems; legal; quality management; and leadership areas in the curriculum. Health Information is a good career choice for those who want to work in health care but not directly with patients.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements in the healthcare industry;
- Interpret financial and/or healthcare data;
- Compare reimbursement methodologies;
- Choose accurate medical and surgical codes;
- Utilize software for health information management; and
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior.
The AAS degree includes both the AHIMA Data Management Track and Revenue Management Track.
The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Rose State College accepts 15 students each fall, with applications open from February 1 to April 15. Students can take General Education and Support courses alongside program courses. The program lasts two years, with professional courses offered during the day. Graduates are eligible to apply for the RHIT® certification exam through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) through 2028. Suggested Order of Enrollment
Students should enroll in a combination of General Education Requirements and Program Requirements to complete the degree. Consult with the Health Sciences division advisor each semester to verify that selected courses will fulfill degree requirements. Check the College Catalog and/or class schedule for course offering specifics. The “+” symbol represents a prerequisite for the course. Any course offering is subject to change without notice. Career Information for Health Information Management Professionals
Health Information Management (HIM) professionals, including Registered Health Information Technicians (RHITs), are in high demand as the healthcare sector continues to grow. New HIM graduates typically earn between $25,000 and $35,000 annually, with salaries varying by job setting and responsibilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 22% growth in health information technician employment, driven by the rise of electronic health records.
RHITs have diverse career opportunities in hospitals, insurance agencies, physician practices, and more. They work in roles like Clinical Coding Specialist, HIM Director, Health Data Analyst, and Privacy Officer. RHITs ensure health information is complete, secure, and accessible, manage medical records, and support decision-making in healthcare.
RHITs are employed across various settings, including long-term care, rehabilitation centers, and pharmaceutical companies.
The Health Information Management accreditor of Rose State College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for the associate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2028. Students are strongly encouraged to speak with a Health Sciences Advisor every semester to help stay on track and be prepared to apply.
Admission to the Health Information Management Program professional courses is by a special application procedure. The only entry to the professional courses is in the fall of each year.
The application period is February 1 through April 15. A link to the application will be found on this page only during the application period.
Completed applications and all requested documents must be returned to the Health Sciences Division Office by April 15th at 5:00 pm. Late applications are accepted only if space permits.
The following application procedure should serve as a guide when applying to the program.
- Apply to Rose State College (if not currently admitted).
- Applicants must be admitted to the college through the Admissions office before application to the Health Information Management Program can be made.
- Official college transcripts(s) of coursework not completed at Rose State College must be submitted to the Admissions office.
- Submit a request for a degree audit for the Health Information Technology Program (only required if student has out-of-state credits). Visit Degree Audit for more information.
- Submit the Health Information Technology application to include:
- College Transcript(s) not on file with the Admissions and Records Office.
- Next-Generation Accuplacer test results: Writing, Reading, and Pre-Algebra. All applicants must take the Accuplacer exams within three (3) years prior to application. Information Session: Applicants will be contacted to schedule an information session with the HIM program director and faculty. The purpose of the information session is to convey important information about the program. Applicants have the opportunity to ask questions.
Criteria for Program Selection
Fifteen students are selected each year.
All applicants are notified by mail of their admission status by June 30.
Applicants are ranked based on college transcripts, Next-Generation Accuplacer test scores, experience, communication skills, and an interview with the program director and faculty.
Grades in General Education and Support & Related courses taken prior to application to the program will be “weighted” when rating and ranking points.
