Health & Sports Sciences – Personal Trainer

Program Goals & Outcomes

The goal of the Health and Sports Sciences Program Associate of Science Degree, Personal Trainer Option, is to prepare students to do 1-on-1 fitness programming. The Rose State College Personal Trainer degree is designed to prepare students to take the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Training exam and/or to transfer to a 4-year university to complete a baccalaureate degree.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of physical activity;
  • Design physical fitness programs;
  • Assess weight management programs;
  • Examine sports nutrition and supplements; and
  • Identify legal responsibilities of health and sports sciences professionals.

The Personal Training option prepares you to do one-on-one fitness programming. This option prepares you to take the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Training exam and/or to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree upon completion of the Associate of Science degree.

The 24-credit hour Personal Training certificate program prepares you to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a major or minor in Health and Sport Sciences and/or work in physical therapy programs, personal training studios, wellness centers, fitness facilities, weight loss clinics, and sport strength and conditioning facilities.

English Composition (6 hours)

Science Electives

HSBC 1104, HSBC 1224, HSBC 2103, HSBC 2114, GEOG 1114, or any course with the following prefixes: ASTR, BIOL, CHEM, ENSC, GEOL, METR, PHSC, or PHYS

Mathematics Electives

Any MATH course which is at least 1000 level or higher except MATH 2013, MATH 2023, & MATH 2033

Personal Trainer Certificate Required Courses (25 hours)

The certificate will be awarded upon degree completion unless the student opts out in writing to the Graduation Office before graduation.

Courses within the certificate may be applied to an AS degree, where students may be eligible to receive a certificate and an AS degree.

This certificate is designed to:

  • Prepare students who have successfully completed these courses to enter the workforce;
  • Refresh the students’ skills that are required within the business field; and,
  • Improve the students’ skills for them to receive a promotion or salary incentive within a specific organization.

Students must earn a “C” or better in these courses to be eligible for graduation.
