Modern Languages – Spanish

Program Goals & Outcomes

The Modern Languages program at Rose State offers students elementary and intermediate instruction in Spanish. It also provides elementary-level instruction in French, German, and other languages. When students complete the elementary and intermediate levels of instruction, they will leave Rose State with Intermediate proficiency based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Guidelines.

Rose State College offers an Associate of Arts degree in Modern Language in Spanish. Additionally, we offer a certificate in Intermediate Spanish Proficiency for students of any major.

The goal of the Modern Languages – Spanish Associate of Arts degree program and the Intermediate Spanish Proficiency Embedded Certificate is to provide students with the courses necessary to transfer to Spanish or Spanish Education baccalaureate degree programs or to minor in Spanish at a baccalaureate degree-granting institution. Our mission is to provide students with the courses and resources to reach an intermediate level of proficiency in the language so they can participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world while gaining knowledge and understanding of the cultures and people of Latin America and Spain.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Interpret spoken texts in Spanish;
  • Interpret written texts in Spanish;
  • Communicate in writing in Spanish;
  • Communicate orally in Spanish; and
  • Compare cultures from Spanish-speaking countries with their own.

Students in the program must complete courses listed in Program Requirements and Support & Related sections with a minimum grade of “C” in each course in order to receive the Associate of Arts Degree. Students should consult the four-year institution to which they plan to transfer and carefully select courses that will meet the requirements for the bachelor’s degree program.
