Rose State College faculty, staff, students, community members, and veterans gathered to honor the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of America’s service members during the annual Veterans Day ceremony held on the College’s campus.
The ceremony began with a Presentation of the Colors by the Mid-Del JROTC, followed by a heartfelt performance of the National Anthem sung by Rose State College student Ijahi Jackson. The event also included a special recognition for Veteran Honoree Capt. Gean Atkinson, U.S. Navy (Ret.), a decorated combat veteran and longtime community leader whose service and leadership continue to inspire others.
Capt. Atkinson reflected on the lessons of service and the strength of shared purpose among military members. “We all share one thing in common,” he said. “We’re brothers and sisters in defending and protecting this wonderful country. Our service teaches us to never quit and to face adversity head on. Continue to march!”
President Travis Hurst welcomed attendees with a message of gratitude and reflection, recognizing not only veterans but also the families who support them. “To the mothers, fathers, spouses, and children of our military men and women—thank you,” said Hurst. “Your love, support, and resilience are the backbone of this nation. Freedom endures because brave men and women continue to be willing—if called—to give that last full measure of devotion.”
The ceremony featured a keynote address from Capt. John Keilty, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Capt. Keilty spoke passionately about the unifying spirit of military service and the community’s deep-rooted patriotism. “Every veteran makes America great,” he said. “That is real greatness—servant leadership, uncommon character, and the indomitable American fighting spirit. Veterans are the fabric of America, the heartbeat of freedom, and the defenders of hope and peace around the world.”
Keilty also emphasized Rose State’s continued commitment to veterans and active-duty personnel, noting his 25 years of connection to the college. “You understand their sacrifice, and without compromising high standards, you guide them across the finish line,” he said. “That’s a really big deal for all of our military personnel and their families.”
Throughout the ceremony, attendees honored veterans from every branch of service, as well as first responders, public officials, and families who support the armed forces.
