At Rose State College, student life is more than just the classroom. With dozens of clubs, volunteer opportunities, and special campus events, there is something for everyone to engage in and make lasting connections.
Now there’s even more reason to get involved—intramural sports are back! Reintroduced by the Office of Student Engagement in Spring 2025, these fun and competitive activities offer a new way for students to stay active, build friendships, and be part of campus life. Previously, intramurals had been handled by the Wellness Center and Housing. Moving the intramural league to the Office of Student Engagement made sense because they hear from the students daily and know what sports they want to see.
RSC Recruitment and Engagement Specialist, Brevin Senner, spearheaded the charge, understanding the importance of giving students a way to unwind after their classwork is finished. Rose State offered intramural basketball in the spring and plans to add volleyball and dodgeball in the fall!
“The whole idea of reviving intramural sports here at Rose State College was to give students another opportunity to get involved with a sport they once loved or have always wanted to try,” said Brevin Senner. “We all know how busy students are and how difficult managing school and life balance can be. Students playing intramural sports have that perfect mix of competitiveness, and most importantly, they’re having fun as well.”
Senner organized a five-week intramural basketball league in which 40 students of all athletic backgrounds participated. Each week during the regular season, the students played 30-minute games made up of two 15-minute halves. The teams had to be evenly matched for a game to be played, and they often wore matching-colored shirts.
Playing in the intramural league was enjoyable for many participants because several students were high school athletes.
“One of the best things about playing basketball was the chance to compete once again,” said RSC student Elijah Milette. “My competitive sports career stopped after my senior year of high school, so it was great to be able to go out and play in a league again. I enjoyed having the chance to play basketball again with my friends.”
Not all students participated in the games, though – several RSC students showed up to cheer on their friends playing on the court. On any given evening, you could hear several students shouting words of encouragement from the bleachers.
At Rose State, intramural sports teach more than athletic skills. Many students are learning crucial life lessons they can apply to future degrees or careers.
“Continuing to learn how to be a part of a team is something I think all students should experience and then continue into their careers,” said Director of Student Engagement Paige Stramski. “Coming together with a common goal is something you see in any chapter of life, whether it’s winning the basketball intramural tournament or completing a major project at work.”
RSC students will have another chance to play in intramural sports leagues in the Fall 2025 semester! Senner is excited to offer basketball, dodgeball, and volleyball for RSC students.
