Parent Resources

FERPA & Academic Records

As students begin college, they also gain important rights and responsibilities regarding their educational records. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

Once a student enrolls in college, these rights belong to the student—even if they are under 18 or a parent or guardian is paying for college. This means Rose State College cannot share information such as grades, class schedules, financial aid details, student account information, or disciplinary records without the student’s written permission, except in limited circumstances allowed by law.

We understand that families are valuable partners in student success and encourage students to communicate openly with their parents and supporters about their college experience. Students who would like Rose State to discuss their educational records with a parent or other trusted individual may complete a FERPA release form through the college.

Our goal is to support both students and families while respecting each student’s privacy and helping them develop the independence and confidence needed for success in college and beyond.

Technology & Learning at Rose State

Canvas: Your Student’s Digital Classroom

Canvas is Rose State College’s online learning platform, where students access course materials, submit assignments, take quizzes, communicate with instructors, view grades, and stay organized throughout the semester. Whether courses are online, hybrid, or face-to-face, Canvas is an essential part of the college experience.

Canvas works with most modern web browsers and is compatible with laptops, tablets, and smartphones through the Canvas Student app. While many devices can access Canvas, a traditional Windows laptop or MacBook generally provides the best experience, particularly for courses that require specialized software, online testing, or extensive writing.

Free Software & Technology Resources

Rose State provides students with access to a variety of free software and technology resources included with tuition. Available tools include Microsoft 365, productivity software, web browsers, PDF readers, screen capture utilities, security software, media applications, and other resources that support coursework.

Before purchasing software, families are encouraged to review the Software Downloads page or have students consult with their instructor to determine whether the required programs are already available through the college. Taking advantage of these resources can help reduce educational costs while ensuring students have the technology they need to succeed.

Computer Labs & Printing

Students also have access to computer labs across campus equipped with the software needed for coursework, high-speed internet, and printing services. Whether completing assignments between classes, accessing specialized software, or printing course materials, campus labs provide convenient technology resources for every student. These spaces ensure that all students have access to the tools they need to be successful, even if they do not have a personal computer available.
