RSCPublic vs Private: What's the difference?
Wireless Networks
Rose State College offers two wireless networks:
RSCPublic
- Available to students, faculty, staff, and guests.
- Requires sign-in through a captive portal each time internet access is initiated on a device.
- Wireless traffic between the device and the access point is not encrypted.
RSCPrivate
- Reserved for faculty and staff.
- Requires a one-time sign-in to verify identity.
- Wireless traffic between the device and the access point is encrypted for added security.
Encrypted vs. Unencrypted Networks
An encrypted wireless network protects data transmitted between a device and the wireless access point, helping prevent unauthorized access.
An unencrypted wireless network transmits data in clear text, allowing anyone with the appropriate tools to potentially intercept wireless traffic.
Is RSCPublic Safe?
Yes. Safe browsing depends on using secure websites.
When accessing websites over any Wi-Fi network—including home, public hotspots, or the Rose State College campus—verify that the website uses HTTPS. Secure websites display https:// at the beginning of the web address. Data exchanged with HTTPS websites is encrypted, even when connected to the RSCPublic network.
RSCPrivate Wireless Network Information
Connecting to RSCPrivate
The following devices can connect to RSCPrivate without additional configuration:
- Apple computers (MacBook, iMac, etc.)
- Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, etc.)
- Android phones and tablets
Windows devices require additional configuration before connecting to RSCPrivate.
The RSCPrivate network uses 802.1X authentication and encryption, requiring a valid Rose State College username and password during the initial connection. After authentication, wireless traffic between the device and the wireless access point is encrypted to provide a secure connection.
RSCPublic Wireless Network Information
Connecting to RSCPublic
Accessing the RSCPublic wireless network requires authentication through a captive portal unless the device has been registered in the My Devices Portal.
